Whether you are preparing for a sale or just want to add a little pizazz to a property you have lived in for a long time, these projects might be for you. Even if you are not keen on the idea of ‘do it yourself’, these really are fast and affordable fixes you can do yourself. Here’s some simple ways to enhance you property without blowing the budget.
Let there be light
One simple way to shift the ambience of a room – or lots of rooms – is by changing light fittings. This can be as easy as purchasing a new globe – there are a wide range of decorative globes which provide diverse lighting options. Depending on your room you can go with a warm glow or even a muted colour. If your budget extends to a little more, change the complete fitting. Again the range is almost endless and combined with a new globe, you can really brighten up a tired old space.
Accent-uate a wall
Probably the simplest of all our suggested changes, this involves taking one wall in a key room – perhaps the living or dining room – and painting it a colour to reflect you, your life or personality. This is a change that can happen in a single day but have a huge impact on the look and feel of the room. If you are not confident with colours, there are plenty of tips online or the person who sells the paint is usually experienced enough to give advice. Again, if the budget is a little higher, there are now a range of decorative ‘photograph’ wallpapers that can transform a room to a totally different place, depending on your choice.
Adding a shelf to a blank wall space can be both practical and decorative. You can chose to use the shelf for extra storage or you can show off some of your unique possessions. Another shelf could display photos – with the amount of pictures we take daily and the ease of printing, this can be a regularly changing show. The best part of a floating shelf is there are a variety of lengths and depths to suit whatever the size of the room you want to brighten.
Fix the mould
Adding decorative moulding can really change the look and feel of a room. There is a huge range – from highly decorative to simple and plain – and because of the materials now used are relatively cheap, it does not cost a fortune to complete an entire room. You can add the moulding low or high, or even as a picture rail; this will certainly add character to any room.
Make a pit stop
Changes you make outside will also brighten up the property and give it a fresh look. One simple way is to add a fire pit. There is a wide range of inexpensive ready-made pits or if you are feeling more adventurous, you can use stone to construct your own. Of course, you need to ensure that you place the pit safely and away from any structures.
One final tip – don’t take on too much! Choose one project and complete it before starting the next one.
